What is Onychomycosis?

Onychomycosis, the medical term for toenail fungus is an infection caused by fungi, also leads to athlete's foot. In fact, I have noticed that connect the two of them together often.

As a child, the fungus can begin in the soles of the feet and proceeds from there to the toenail bed. As a teenager, it can go in the groin area and cause Jock itch and sometimes to the body, which ringworm. But the toenail is the ideal place for the toenail fungus. Onceit's there, it can stay for life.

Onychomycosis is actually very common and I have found through research that it infects up to as much as 20% of the American population. As we get older, the likelihood of getting toenail fungus increases to about 40% by age 70. The fungi that causes toenail fungus is everywhere, not only in hotel rooms, locker rooms and other public places, but also in most people's homes.

Onychomycosis is caused by a microorganism called a Dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are fungi that infect skin, hair, nails and feed on nail tissue. These fungi live on keratin, the protein is prepared, the toe nails. It thrives in the dark, moist environment of sweaty feet.

Smoking increases the risk of toenail fungus, because it restricts blood flow to his feet. The same is true for diabetes, which also impairs circulation. Advancing age, poor health, trauma and wear shoes that no air can circulate to do to your feetcan all say a contribution to public toenail fungus. experts believe that the use of nail polish does not affect the extent to invite or intensify onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis Symptoms are easy to recognize. Brittle or thick toenails, which may be offensive odor, dull color of the nail with white or yellow spots, and in advanced cases, brown or black spots or stripes signs of fungus. The toe nail can separate from the bed and the edge of the toe nail can be difficulteroded.

In the past, medical treatments for onychomycosis have been poor at best. Since toenails grow so slowly, and very little blood is difficult to treat nail fungus. Recent advances in treatment options, including oral taken (by mouth) and topical (on the skin or nails were applied made) drugs. Newer oral drugs have revolutionized the treatment of onychomycosis. However, the recurrence rate is high even with these newer drugs. Treatmentis expensive and can have unwanted and dangerous side effects.
